    The Senior Group Insurance Underwriter is directly responsible for assessing the risk and making decisions associated with the sale, amendment, financial reporting and renewal of assigned cases. Mid-Market Underwriters handle cases managed by Advisors and Brokers. By aligning with these specific distribution partners the Senior Group Insurance Under is better positioned to provide the unique customization they require. The underwriter role is suited to the inquisitive individual who enjoys continuous learning and applying their knowledge in varied scenarios. The Group Underwriting department provides career advancement opportunities beyond this role.

     

    Accountabilities:

    • Managing the pricing of assigned in-force caseload, including performing the annual renewal of rates and expenses, in-force quotes, marketings and approvals of amendments.
    • The management of all aspects of the financial reporting for assigned caseload
    • Production of financial and service agreements on assigned caseload
    • Handling field/client/advisor inquiries, plan changes, reporting needs
    • Meet with the Assistant Vice-President, Underwriting and/or Vice President, National Accounts as appropriate respecting specified authority levels.
    • Discuss and document all aspects of pricing and financial reporting with the designated Account Manager and or Plan Sponsor as required.
    • Act as a resource within the Underwriting Department by:- participate in departmental projects/initiatives as requested to do
    • Training/mentoring more junior underwriters and/or financial and renewal analysts

    Qualifications and Competencies:

    • Group Insurance Underwriter experience with knowledge of the following topics would be considered an asset:
    • Life, LTD, Health Experience Analysis
    • Types of financial handling–non-refund, refund, ASO, Adjudication Only, pooling
    • Standard interest crediting – cash flow, IBNR, DLR, waiver
    • Standard expense calculations
    • Standard ASO funding and/or billing arrangements
    • Standard financial agreements 
    • Candidates must have post-secondary education or an equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work in partnership with sales offices, team members and other internal areas
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Strong organizational and time management skills; ability to prioritize multiple tasks and shifting priorities
    • Strong negotiating skills
    • Customer service focused
    • Strong mathematical and analytical ability
    • Strong problem solving and decision making skills
    • Prior experience in the Group Division with knowledge of products, Group Mainframe (PAS) system, and GroupNet Reporting will be considered an asset
    • Willingness to work towards a GBA or full CEBS designation under the CEBS program
