*This role is open for both contract and permanent.

This is your opportunity to join a blue-sky innovation and strategic design team at Great-West Life, one of Canada’s oldest and most well-respected companies.

Within Great-West Life is the Innovation Centre - a dynamic team that sits at the centre of the business, alongside the strategy, marketing, and digital teams. We dream big. Our job is to envision the future of our industry and our business, and to make it happen. We use design thinking to find opportunities for growth - whether it’s a new untapped market, a new product/service, or a better way to serve Canadians - and we work with the business to rapidly prototype, test, and implement our ideas.

    Who are we?

We are Great-West Life, and you might know us through our other brands, including Canada Life, London Life, and Freedom 55.

Our mission is to improve the physical, mental, and financial well-being of Canadians, and our reach is enormous: we serve nearly 1 in 3 people across the country. We do that by offering an incredible range of products - from health insurance and life insurance, to retirement plans and investments - through employee benefit programs and through a nation-wide network of advisors who work directly with consumers. And through Portag3 Ventures, our global fintech venture capital fund, we’re shaping the future of digital healthcare, insurance, and financial services through major investments in leading tech start-ups like Wealthsimple, Koho, and Borrowell.

    What’s the job?

We’re looking for a few good Design Researchers, Strategists, and Service Designers to join the Innovation Centre and bring their design thinking skills to all stages of the innovation process, from research to prototyping to implementation. Responsibilities include:

    • Identifying emerging trends and signals relevant to our business, including social, technological, regulatory, and industry trends
    • Quickly learning about complex and unfamiliar topics by conducting secondary research and interviewing experts
    • Designing, executing, and analyzing primary research (interviews, surveys, focus groups, etc.) and ethnography with customers, advisors, and employers – both independently and in collaboration with our resident anthropologist
    • Making sense of large amounts of information to identify unmet customer needs, opportunities, challenges, and unknowns
    • Generating ideas and hypotheses for new products and services, while working out possible business models and value propositions for various stakeholders
    • Developing, testing, and refining prototypes (e.g., sketches, storyboards, models, proofs of concept) to help customers and stakeholders understand how a new product/service might function
    • Supporting the development of business models and implementation plans
    • Facilitating workshops and collaborating with business leaders, technical experts, and legal/regulatory experts to work out concept details and resolve challenges
    • Writing and presenting compelling stories, articles, and presentations (using various media) to share findings and make recommendations

    What does it take?

To be successful in this role, you’ll need:

    • An insatiable curiosity about the world around you; to be the type of person who can’t stop asking questions
    • The courage to tackle complex and ambiguous questions, to take on wicked problems that don’t have simple solutions, and to get up to speed on financial, technical, and regulatory issues whenever they come up
    • Boldness, a self-starter attitude, and a bias for action; your natural instinct when you discover a problem is to propose and prototype a solution
    • Truly awesome communication skills; the ability to take complicated ideas and distill them into clear and compelling narratives; comfort with using words, pictures, and data to tell stories
    • Comfort leading discussions with senior leaders, business partners, and consumers
    • A strong interest in products and services that help customers with physical, mental, and financial well-being; experience in financial services or a health-related sector is a bonus
    • At least 2-5 years* of work experience, including at least 1 year in a research, customer insights, design, innovation, strategy, or product management/development role (*NOTE: candidates with more than 5 years of experience will be considered for more senior positions)

Why is this a great role?

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for several reasons:

    • Your work will have real impact. Since we serve 1 in 3 Canadians and tackle the biggest challenges in physical, mental, and financial well-being, your work has the potential to transform the country.
    • You’ll learn constantly as you work across a huge and varied business alongside a multitude of experts on fascinating topics.
    • A caring, collaborative, and diverse team will surround you, and be committed to helping you learn and grow.
